Answer

Whenever you need to have a videoconference with more than 1 remote participant, a multipoint control unit (MCU) is required to synchronize the audio and video from the participants.
 
Some videoconferencing units have a built-in MCU, so you can call several parties directly from the unit.
 
At CERN we have 2 external MCU services: ESnet and HERMES. Follow this link to learn more about the MCU services available at CERN.
